The DiClad 880 datasheet read as design decisions: phase stability, mechanical toughness, process compatibility and its qualification footprint.
DiClad 880 is Rogers’ ceramic-filled PTFE laminate built around a Dk of 2.20 ±0.02 and a dissipation factor of 0.0009 at 10 GHz — the same electrical neighborhood as RT/duroid 5880 (analyzed in our 5880 parameter breakdown) but with a glass-microfiber reinforcement that changes the mechanical story. The reinforcement gives the laminate stiffness and dimensional stability that pure PTFE constructions give up, which is why 880 appears where boards must hold shape under handling, thermal cycling, and mechanical mounting stress.
The dielectric constant moves less than 0.3% from −50°C to +150°C. For an antenna feed network, that number converts directly into beam-pointing stability: phase error is proportional to Dk drift, so a laminate that holds its constant holds its pattern. Radar front ends and phased-array apertures — where the channel-consistency logic mirrors our 64-channel phased-array analysis — are the natural beneficiaries.
The glass-microfiber reinforcement raises the laminate’s resistance to cracking during drilling and routing. Peeling strength above 98% retention after thermal cycling means plated features stay anchored where unreinforced PTFE can work loose. For fabricators, the practical translation is wider process windows: standard mechanical drilling with carbide tools, conventional routing, and less handling fragility during multilayer lamination — constraints that are described in our lamination process guide.
DiClad 880 machines like a conventional substrate even though it behaves like a premium one. Laser drilling and precision etching hold ±5 μm edge verticality, and the material accepts plasma desmear for reliable via metallization — the PTFE pretreatment step detailed in our drilling defect prevention guide. Dielectric thickness is offered from 0.127 mm to 3.175 mm, covering everything from tight microstrip sections to power-plane separation in the same material family.
UL94 V-0 flammability and IPC-4103/126 slash-sheet listing put 880 inside the qualification envelope for aerospace and defense programs — the standards landscape is mapped in our aerospace RF requirements analysis. For commercial programs, the same listing simplifies customer audits because material traceability comes with the laminate rather than being negotiated per order.
Three deployment profiles dominate. Automotive radar antennas at 24–77 GHz use the temperature-stable Dk for consistent patterns across the thermal environment. Satellite communication power modules combine the low loss with the CTE-matched copper foil’s lamination stability. Electronic-warfare RF front ends take the mechanical toughness and the defense-qualification pedigree. In mmWave designs where an alternative hydrocarbon laminate is on the table, our TLY-5 comparison covers the Taconic counterpart’s trade-offs.
Ordering 880 well comes down to four line items: state the dielectric thickness and copper weight per layer; reference the impedance table with target tolerances; require per-lot material certifications against the IPC-4103 slash sheet; and specify the surface finish explicitly — ENIG for solderability, bare copper for wire-bondable regions. A fabricator fluent in PTFE processing will return coupon data with the shipment; one who is not, will not.
