PTFE PCB manufacturing requires careful coordination of laminate selection, mechanical processing, hole-wall preparation and surface finishing. Compared with standard FR4, PTFE-based RF materials can require additional process controls. This article uses an example fabrication instruction sheet to show how engineering requirements should be documented.
1. Representative fabrication specification
The following values describe one sample design, not universal manufacturing tolerances or the default capabilities of HF PCB Pro. The exact PTFE laminate grade must be confirmed before quotation and production.
| Parameter | Example specification |
|---|---|
| Material | PTFE-based laminate, exact grade to confirm |
| Supplier | Taizhou Wangling, as identified in the example |
| Finished thickness | 2.0 mm ±10% |
| Finished outer copper | 35 μm |
| Minimum trace width/spacing | 10/10 mil |
| Minimum hole diameter | 0.8 mm |
| Board dimensions | 150 × 60 mm |
| Outline tolerance | ±0.5 mm |
| Solder mask | None |
| Legend | White, one side |
| Finish | ENIG |
| Impedance control | Not specified |

2. Identify the exact PTFE laminate
PTFE is a broad material family; different products use different reinforcement, ceramic fillers and copper foils. A manufacturer needs the exact grade, dielectric constant (Dk), dissipation factor (Df), frequency of characterization, dielectric thickness, foil type and thermal behavior. Materials should not be substituted merely because their nominal Dk values look similar.
3. Mechanical tolerances and board thickness
The example’s nominal finished thickness is 2.0 mm with a ±10% tolerance, corresponding to a 1.8–2.2 mm example acceptance range. This may be unsuitable for designs using precision edge-launch connectors or tightly controlled impedances. Confirm the required tolerance against final assembly needs. The 150 × 60 mm outline and ±0.5 mm example tolerance likewise belong only to this sample product.
4. Copper and RF transmission lines
The example calls for 35 μm finished outer copper and 10/10 mil minimum trace/space. These figures define manufacturing geometry, not RF impedance. Microstrip, stripline and grounded coplanar waveguide impedance depends on laminate Dk, dielectric spacing, trace width, copper thickness and nearby reference conductors. Copper foil roughness can also contribute to high-frequency insertion loss.
5. PTFE drilling and plated-hole processing
Appropriate tooling and drilling conditions depend on the laminate formulation. Certain PTFE-based structures need specialized hole-wall activation, such as plasma processing, before reliable copper metallization. Exact parameters should be determined by the material and process specification. The example’s 0.8 mm minimum hole diameter must be clarified as a finished or drilled size before production.
6. Bare copper, solder mask and ENIG
The sample board has no solder mask. This may suit particular exposed RF patterns or grounding structures, but surface protection and handling become important. ENIG produces a relatively flat, corrosion-resistant solderable finish; however, its nickel layer can increase conductor loss in some high-frequency geometries. Review sensitive transmission-line designs with the manufacturer.
The example includes a minimum gold thickness notation of 2 microinches. Any actual ENIG order should reference an agreed finish standard and define both gold and nickel requirements.

7. Quality controls for RF fabrication
Useful acceptance checks include laminate identity, finished thickness, conductor dimensions, drill quality, plating integrity, surface finish, board outline, continuity and isolation. Controlled-impedance coupons should be added if the design specifies impedance control. Ask the fabrication team to review material and process compatibility before production.
8. RF PCB quotation package
When requesting a quote, provide the laminate grade, quantities, stackup, board thickness, copper thickness, dimensions, drill tables, finish, fabrication data and any additional impedance or inspection requirements. For additional context, see our high-frequency PCB information guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a PTFE PCB?
A PCB fabricated using a PTFE-containing dielectric laminate, often selected for specialized RF or microwave applications.
Does every PTFE PCB require plasma processing?
No. Surface preparation depends on the specific laminate and plating system.
Can PTFE PCBs be made without solder mask?
Yes, provided the exposed metal and assembly conditions are specified.
Is ENIG always best for RF applications?
No. Assess RF conductor loss and soldering requirements together.
